As we step into a new year, YNPN Phoenix takes a moment to celebrate and reflect on the incredible service of our 2024 Board Members. Leading the way were our President, Allen Frost, CNP MNLM, and Secretary, Rory Wilson, whose dedication and passion helped shape the organization and create meaningful opportunities for emerging nonprofit leaders. We asked them to share their experiences, insights, and advice for future board members.
Finding a Home in YNPN Phoenix
For Rory Wilson, the journey began with encouragement from a supervisor during an internship. After exploring YNPN Phoenix’s mission and events, they were drawn to the organization’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive nonprofit sector. “As a college student passionate about making a difference in the public sector, the chance to learn from and collaborate with nonprofit professionals in a supportive space was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” they shared.
Similarly, Allen Frost, CNP MNLM, joined YNPN Phoenix to build connections and expand their understanding of the nonprofit sector. Referred by a supervisor, they saw YNPN as an opportunity to network with professionals beyond their own organization and gain valuable insight into how nonprofits operate.
Memorable Moments of Growth and Community
Board service is filled with learning experiences, but some moments stand out more than others. For Rory Wilson, the most memorable experience was their first day as a board member at the “New Year, New Connections” event. Walking into a room of warm and welcoming people, they immediately felt a sense of belonging. “That day, I learned a valuable lesson that defines YNPN Phoenix: We all start somewhere, and the best thing we can do is show up as our authentic selves and seek help when needed.”
For Allen Frost, CNP MNLM, the board retreats and strategic planning sessions were particularly impactful. These gatherings showcased the power of collaboration, as individuals from diverse backgrounds and experience levels came together to advance YNPN Phoenix’s mission. “The environment was open to new perspectives and ideas, allowing the organization to innovate. It is still incredibly refreshing knowing that YNPN has adopted such an inclusive culture,” they reflected.
The Lasting Impact of Board Service
Both leaders expressed gratitude for how YNPN Phoenix has shaped their professional journeys. Serving on the board provided Rory Wilson with valuable marketing and communications experience, empowered them to take on leadership roles in other organizations, and reaffirmed their ability to make an impact. Allen Frost, CNP MNLM, highlighted how YNPN helped them build lasting relationships with professionals across Arizona, some of whom have become close friends and mentors. Additionally, they gained hands-on experience in nonprofit program leadership, development, and administration.
Words of Wisdom for Future Board Members
Looking ahead, both leaders offered advice for those considering board service. Rory Wilson encouraged future members to focus on their capacity, not just their capabilities. “YNPN Phoenix is a space where you can comfortably learn and grow, so don’t shy away from new challenges just because you lack experience.”
Allen Frost, CNP MNLM, emphasized the opportunity to shape the organization. “YNPN Phoenix is a place for those with fresh eyes to create innovative change in the sector. Take this unique opportunity to develop an organization that resembles the one you’d love to work for, with programs and an environment that invite your presence.”
As we honor the contributions of our 2024 Board Members, we also look forward to the future leaders who will continue to drive YNPN Phoenix forward. Thank you to our outgoing board members for their dedication, passion, and leadership. Your impact will be felt for years to come!
